Lady Aubrey has a problem. Several problems. Her childhood love, Ethan, has returned home from the Crusades, but he’s more interested in winning his land back than wooing her. She has to rescue a pair of nuns who are being held prisoner in Derby Castle’s tower by the sadistic Sheriff Buxton. And to top it all off she’s developing scandalous feelings for Buxton’s lackey, the dark and devilish Crispin. Faced with all that, what’s a girl to do but don a disguise as the Derbywood Bandit and take matters into her own hands?
Sir Crispin is at his wit’s end. Not only does he have his hands full keeping Buxton from killing half the shire, now his arch nemesis, the Derbywood Bandit, has joined forces with his old rival, Ethan. And that’s nothing compared to the burning torch he carries for his ex-fiancé, Lady Aubrey. He would do anything to win Aubrey’s love …
… until he suspects that there could be a closer connection between Aubrey and the Derbywood Bandit than anyone has guessed.

Lady Aubrey’s childhood love Ethan returns from fighting for his country. His home is claimed by a new Lord Crispin the one man he truly loathed. Ethan needs to get his land back and the only way to do so is to get people on his side to fight with him. Lady Aubrey fights right alongside him taking up his cause, a cause which also includes fighting for the King. Along the way a pair of nuns get caught up with them and are captured by the sadistic Sheriff Buxton. The problem is, Ethan is more focused on his fight to get his land back that he does not care about anything else. In trying to save the nuns Lady Aubrey ends up finding out more about Crispin than she bargained for. He is not exactly what she thought he was. He actually seemed like a good man, not the one Ethan had her believe. She starts to have feelings for him too. She is confused and does not know where her heart truly lies.
Sir Crispin has his hands full trying to stop Sheriff Buxton from killing half the shire and fighting the Derbywood bandit who seems to have now joined forces with his old rival Ethan. Worst of all Lady Aubrey the one woman who he will do anything for, seems to be smitten with Ethan. His heart can’t take it anymore.
How far does one go in the fight for what you believe and who you believe in? Where does one’s loyalties lay? Can your heart play tricks on you? I believe this story is telling us just that. I could not put the book down. The fighting between the groups and the back and forth with Audrey and her feelings for these two men kept this story intriguing to the end. I needed to know who won Lady Aubrey’s heart.
