About FROM GODS (Descendant Prophecies Book 1)

***2013 InD’Tale RONE Award Finalist for YA****
Did you just see a flash of lightning across the sky on a clear sunny day?
Don’t blame Mother Nature.

Skylar Rome can’t wait to spend her last summer before college with her cousin, Kayla. Everything changes when they meet the Grand brothers. Skylar is sure she should stay away from Mason Grand, but their attraction is undeniable. Then Skylar’s life erupts into turmoil. She steps into a world where descendants of ancient gods have super powers, evil beings chase her, and questions arise about her own identity. She is running out of time and running for her life, while trying to unravel the mystery of what they want from her.

Forced into a battle set into motion long before she was born, will Skylar find the answers she seeks, or will she die trying?

Skylar is your typical carefree teenager. She spends every summer with her cousin Kayla who she can’t wait to see.  It is the last summer before they both go off to college and of course the only thing they want to do is hang by the beach and look for boys. Things may have taken a little turn in their plans when Kayla has to work at her mom’s dinner because they are shorthanded. That does not seem to stop the boy plans however when the Grand brothers come into eat.  Hot is an understatement. Skylar seems to have an instant attraction to Mason Grand, but the grand brothers is not what they seem.  Skylar soon finds out and is introduced to a world that has only existed in books.  This new world seems to be sucking Skylar in and in the dead way.  Who is she and why are they trying to kill her.  Skylar is learning that she is not who she thought she was.  Not only is she fighting for her life but for her identity as well. Who is she?

Cute story, faced paced, interesting twist on Demi Gods.  There were a few holes in the story, especially when Skylar does go back to college after fighting for her life.  but am thinking I may learn more in the next installment.  Definitely will pick it up and finish the series, the way book one ended I have no choice, I have to know.

If you like young adult fantasy with a twist of romance and demi gods.  Then I recommend.

Review: RISK OF EXPOSURE by Emmy Curtis – Book #6 – Alpha Ops Series

He is a trained professional—but nothing can prepare him for the hottest mission of his life. Assigned to protect his boss’s daughter, British former SAS operative Malone Garrett breaks the first rule of covert surveillance—don’t make contact. And especially don’t take your mark out to dinner, then agree to a rooftop quickie.  But now that Mal has Abby in his arms, he has no intention of ever letting her go.

Abby Baston told herself it was a hit and quit, a one-nighter with a hot, handsome stranger whose hands were trained to take action. Working undercover for the CIA, she can’t risk anything more. But when an international crisis ignites, Abby must make a call: trust Mal with her secret—and her                                                       heart— and partner up, or lose everything in a split second . . .

Malone Garrett a former British SAS operative is on a new assignment, watching his boss’s daughter Abby Baston.  How did he end up on the most boring job ever!  She does nothing, sleeps, works, eats, sleeps that is the gist of it until one day he saw a different side of her. A side that did not match her mundane life style.  Intrigued Malone got a little closer.  He made contact, what harm? Step on the brakes Malone, contact did not mean sleeping with the boss’s daughter the biggest “NO” ever.  What he did not expect it was an act, her mundane lifestyle. Abby was full of secrets herself. Now Malone can’t get Abby out of his head and has no intention of letting her go not to mention he can’t any way, her mission has turned into an international crisis, exactly what he is trained for.

Abby Baston scratched an itch with Malone, not that she does this all the time, Hey he’s hot with great hands. Problem bad timing and not knowing Malone was watching her when three slugs followed her into an alley. Now they are stuck with each other and Abby has to trust him and bring him into her mission.

Story was fun and action packed.  Loved the plot concept and the relationship between Malone and Garrett, especially watching the trust grow between them.  The suspense of the situations was there and very apparent but I did not necessarily feel that emotion in the writing. I was told it but did not feel it. It was a good story and will pick up another Curtis book.

WARNING: Contains naughty words Grandma wouldn’t approve of, smoking hot love scenes Grandma can’t get enough of, all the quirks of small-town life, and a swoon-worthy, no-cliffhangers-no-regrets romance.

Nicole DeMonde is back in Regret Hollow, her home town for her brother’s wedding. Nicole did not expect her first regret back was the rental car to break down on the side of the road. Nor did she expect right down the street from her ex-cons fathers’ house. Nope, worse the police officer that pulled up just happened to be her ex-boyfriend Wyatt that dumped her after they slept together in her teens.  Yep, they don’t call it Regret Hollow for no reason. Just the weekend she can get through this, as she keeps telling herself but trying to avoid Wyatt has become a problem.

Wyatt on the other hand is not letting up he wants to make amends for the way he treated her so he is constantly pushing but the issue now is she is being pushed right into his heart.

Regrets? Definitely we all have one or two. This story takes you through the struggles and triumphs working through those regrets in your life.   What better way to work it out than hot steamy sex oh yeah that definitely helps.  Wyatt and Nicole definitely have that going on and much more.

If you are looking for a light Steamy read I recommend

Book Review – Empathy (Emotional Chains Book 1) by Carolyn Wren

Book Description:

What is Oliver’s secret, and why is he so determined to keep her at arm’s length?

A violent kidnapping and murder forces the empaths from the shadows to seek justice for one of their own.  Oliver turns to Zoe, needing her comfort and love. Can she accept him for who he is?

Oliver and two powerful empathic friends need to track down the kidnappers before they strike again, but how do you solve a murder, when your only clue is emotion?

Book Trailer:

Book Review

Oliver Lord watched his brother walk away from him, knowing he would never see him again.  His brother Jasper was fated to die like his father. He just wanted to live the last year of his life happy and with the woman Zoe who he was in love with.   Oliver and his brother Jasper were empaths they could feel emotions as a physical sense. After his brother’s death Oliver would take glimpses into Zoe’s mind. If he looked deep enough he could find the essence of his brother.

Zoe lost her fiancé, she did not think she could ever find love again. Especially not in the woods were her and Jasper would love to spend time.

Oliver did not expect to be caught by Zoe watching him and Zoe did not expect the man she caught to have the same eyes as her fiancé.  They were instantly drawn to each other. Is it because of Jasper or something else?

An empath was kidnapped, Oliver being an empath felt him die.   Oliver turned to Zoe for comfort while searching for the kidnappers before they struck again.   Would she accept him?

The book was well written, an easy flow. The characters were entertaining and believable. It wasn’t action packed but it did not need to be because it definitely had me wanting more.  When there was action it definitely was explosive.  The romance that was between Oliver and Zoe was just as explosive.  Warning there is a cliff hanger, I am not one to be crazy about these however the book was very enjoyable that I would definitely pick up book two to find out what happens.

Book Review: The Reluctant Prince by Dani-Lyn Alexander

Betrayal lies cloaked in shadow.

Seventeen year old Ryleigh Donnovan is certain her life is cursed. Nothing ever goes smoothly, and her first job interview is no exception. An earthquake rocks the building, sending Ryleigh on a frantic search for her younger sister, a search which lands her in the hospital. Terrified they’ll push her for answers she can’t afford to give, Ryleigh flees with a mysterious stranger.

Jackson Maynard is about to be ordained as a Death Dealer, a warrior for the Kingdom of Cymmera, but first he must pass one more test. When he fails to acquire the human girl the prophet has chosen, he’s forced to stand trial for treason. Banished from his realm, he seeks out the girl from the vision, Ryleigh Donnovan, and together they embark on a journey to save his dying kingdom.

Dani-Lyn Alexander lives on Long Island with her husband, three kids and three dogs. She loves spending time with her family, at the beach, the playground, or just about anywhere. In her spare time, which is rare, she enjoys reading and shopping—especially in book stores. Some of her favorite things include; Bernese Mountain Dogs, musicals, bubble baths and soft blankets. She’s an incurable insomniac and has an addiction to chocolate.

Ryleigh Donnovan lost her parents at a young age and now her grandmother just a week ago.   Just 17 years old she is forced to look after her sister Mia and not let anyone know that her grandmother died.  They had no money, Ryleigh had to find a job to keep them fed.   It would have been alright if she was even old enough to be her sister’s guardian or if an earth quake didn’t erupt during her interview.  She struggled to find her sister in the aftermath of the earthquake. She went back down to the first floor where she had left her. She could not walk any more, later she found herself in the hospital, could this day get any worse? She needed to quickly get out of their before they really started  asking questions. She finally had to rely on some stranger to help them get out without being noticed.

Jackson Maynard, to become a death dealer he had to obtain, kill and bring Ryleigh back to the kingdom of Cymmera. Not exactly in that order. Something about her stopped him.  Now he has to face his father and possibly be charged with treason for going against a direct order.  Jackson’s father banished him and stripped him of all powers with the help of Kai. The kings trusted advisor who bides by the rules and seems to hate Jackson.  Jackson was given three months to prove his case of why he could not do it.   Will what he find be enough to keep them both alive.

It was an interesting story, I was definitely entertained. Very fast paced and action packed from the beginning. You understood the characters especially Ryleigh who would fight to her death to protect her sister. Even if it meant trusting Jackson who’s soul purpose of being in her existence was to kill her. Jackson’s and Ryleigh’s romance evolved through the story, you felt apart of it.  I enjoyed the story and recommend it.

Review: Heart of Rocky by Kelsey Jordan

Book Description

The Takeover
Tor Omar James, King of the North African pride, needs one woman if he has any hope of keeping his sanity – Anise, his Soul’s Mate. There’s only one problem: she’s pregnant by Derrick, Tor of the United States pride. Anise is caught between the love that every Lycan covets and the motherly devotion to the son she would sacrifice so much for. Can Omar survive the takeover of the US pride and convince Anise that he is more man than lion?

The Defender
Asim Tyson, the Defender of the Hafiz, is fighting off the insanity of his longing after losing his Soul’s Mate in battle. Unfortunately, his self-centered existence results in the gross neglect of his people when they need him the most. When Harmony appears in his life, he is forced to make a choice. Should he resist the lure of Harmony’s caustic melody or embrace his weakness in order to keep her safe?

The Takeover

Can you imagine a word that you knew who your soul mate was? How easy would that be? There it’s that one over there. Forget about all the heart ache at having to find that one person.

Omar James knew who his soul mate was, the problem was she was married to another man and having his baby. To get to her he had to take over the US pride. Their Tor was his mates husband, Derek and may I add a total schmuck. How Derek treated Anise while she was delivering his baby was despicable. I wanted to go through the book and strangle him myself. I had stronger words in mind however not very PG. Anise, Omar’s soul mate and married to Derrick knows that Omar is coming to take over, she is happy to see Derrick go to his death but at what cost, her sons? Omar not only has to win the take over but worse win his mates trust over her son.

The Defender:

Now imagine finding that one person for you, then losing them or not being able to have them.   Maybe not knowing you have a soul mate is a way to go after all.

Tyson lost his soul mate and has not been the same since.  In Tyson’s world not being with your soul mate can make you insane.   In Tyson’s case insane, not really, self absorbed maybe.  Ok more than maybe, he has neglected his people for way too long.  It has taken a woman named Harmony to open his eyes and see whats going on around him.  Is that enough though.

Omar and Tyson were strong powerful men fighting for their soul mates in one form or another Equally important the woman in their lives were a force to be reckoned with themselves even though they had gotten themselves in bad situations.   Anise with the wrong man and Harmony the wrong place at the wrong time. Both not letting the situations get the best of them, which trust me once you read you wonder if they can emotionally be the same again. Heart of Rocky was not one story but two novellas together.  You really did not need to read one to understand the other. The plots were well laid out with an easy flow.  At times Kelsey Jordan told you rather than showed you which could get a little confusing.  All in all both stories were interesting and different and I liked them, you would enjoy as well.

Book Review: Burned by Karen Moning

Book Description:

It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth.

Book Review:

I’ve been a long time reader of Karen Moning, all the way back to her highlander books. In my opinion, Iced was her finest work to date and one of my favorite books. I felt a great anticipation for Burned, which grew steadily in the two year wait. After all, if she could write Iced in a year, Burned had to be the end all be all of urban fantasy if it took her twice as long. Now, I’m feeling a bit singed myself.

Before I get into why I was disappointed, I still have to give Burned its due. The writing, the choice of words and the care put into every sentence, still sets Moning apart from the crowd. She’s a truly gifted wordsmith and this book was no different. My beef is with the plot. It wasn’t the concrete goal and conflict I’d come to expect from her. It almost seemed more of an after thought.

Another issue I had and this stems from my own personal tastes is, having so many point of views. When I read, I don’t like to get a taste of this and that, I want a main character I can feast upon. And the fact that the main point of view wasn’t Dani, like I’d been anticipating, didn’t help the matter. Yes, we do get some, but not nearly what I’d expected after coming off of Iced.

So how do I justify my four star rating? Because Moning, even at her worst, is much better than most.

Book Review & Rafflecopter: Dark Siren by Eden Ashley

To survive, their bond must be unbreakable.

When the mysterious and passionate Rhane rescues Kali from an attacker in the theater parking lot, they form an immediate, smoldering connection. But Kali doesn’t remember Rhane or anything from their past. As far as Kali knows, she’s just a seventeen-year-old kid coping with an insatiable hunger for the “spark” or energy of others, feeding on classmates to survive.

A unique artifact—one that may hold the key to returning Kali’s memories—is uncovered by the archaeology firm where she works part-time, sending Kali and Rhane on a dangerous journey that leads them to the Forbidden City, into the unforgiving Gobi, and into the ruins of Rhane’s ancient homeland. As they fight for survival, Kali begins to discover who she really is and the true power she possesses.

But Rhane still harbors a secret that could destroy Kali…unless old enemies kill her first.

I’m Eden Ashley and I was born and raised in a small, sunny town in South Carolina. However, it’s the thunderstorms that inspire my best ideas. There are few things I love more than curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee on a rainy day, (except maybe chocolate cake. I love cake.) often reading into the wee hours of morning when something really grabs me. I pretty much love anything with supernatural elements, so writing paranormal romance and fantasy romance seems to be a natural fit.

My first novel, Dark Siren, is best described as paranormal romance artfully wrapped within a plot chock-full of action, adventure, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, while the series has evolved to become a journey of redemption and second chances as two characters understand that sometimes committing evil is necessary to protect what is loved most. I took the siren from Greek mythology (and borrowed a little from mermaid lore), creating an entirely different creature, with its own mythology, and one that Publisher’s Weekly praised for its passion and complexity. This is not just another werewolf/shapeshifter romance or vampire romance. I think this is a story that both adults and teens can enjoy, full of characters to fall in love with!

Book Review:

This book had a catchy start, likable characters and and interesting storyline. But, and there always is a but, it took a long time to build up steam.

Let’s start with the positive. Kali was an interesting young woman with a unique ability to steal the life force from others. Her leading man, Rhane, was a nice compliment to her character and was tough in all the places you wanted him to be. The storyline was interesting and original.

Now to the dark side of things. It took a long to get into the story.  I started losing interest until I hit the halfway mark.  At that point things take an upturn and the pacing is much better.  In the end, you are still left with questions and it is a bit cliffy however, I’ll probably be checking out the next book in the series.

Book Blitz & Review: Deceived (Soul Keeper #1) by L.A. Starkey

Book Description:

They say a soul is the immaterial essence, the animating principle, the actuating cause of an individual life.

But what if you had to share yours with the one person you hated the most?

The soul mate principle states that for every one soul there is another that will recognize its match, hence creating the perfect union.

But what if you had two soul mates, which would you choose?

What if your choices had eternal ramification?

Deceived, the debut novel in the Soul Keeper Series, is a modern day love story about the implications of having more than one soul mate, and having to choose between the two of them. The decisions of the gods has left the next generation, their heirs, torn between fate and reality, and the balance of the future hangs in anticipation of what’s to come.

Book Review:

Deceived is the first book in the new Soul Keeper series.  The story centers around a confused teenage girl, who is unknowingly the center of a prophecy.  She thought she had a rough life growing up, and my guess is it’s going to get a lot tougher.  As a pawn to the gods, she is caught between two soulmates who are both incredibly gorgeous.  Who wouldn’t want that?  Well, that is until you realize the price that has to be paid to connect with your soulmate.

An interesting tale that at times seemed to drag a little.  It was definitely just the beginning of the story to come. However, it was extremely touching and at times brought tears to my eyes.  I was slightly disappointed because it ends with a bit a cliffhanger, but it also had enough of a twist for me to want to read more.  Definitely an enjoyable read that has caught my attention.
